Intensive Mothering?

26/1/2018

Barbie has been writing a lot recently about the dominant mothering ideology - Intensive Mothering.
This tells us that “good” mothering involves three things:
1. Essentialism (no-one can do the job of mothering children as well as their mother)
2. Sacrifice on the part of the mother (always putting the child first)
3. Vocation (women are natural mothers and should be fulfilled by mothering)
But how does this compare to your style of mothering?

and the Joy...

Barbie has been thinking a lot about the negative emotions that can sometimes be associated with the overwhelming expectations of twenty-first century mothering and to be honest it's been getting her down a wee bit.

This week then it was a lovely change to be able to write about the joy.  Today she wrote this....

"For me, becoming a mother has been a gift greater than I could ever have imagined.
It has been the source of immense joy and the origin of an unconditional love more intense and profound than I thought I was ever capable of or would ever know.

Watching my two children, so different from each other and us and yet rooted in the same earth grow and mature and thrive has been a huge privilege and a colossal source of pride.  Of all that I have achieved, I would regard becoming and being a mother as my life’s work because as one of the participants in the research Marina said; “our children are our masterpieces”.

What aspects of mothering bring you joy?

The Shame Game

Barbie has  been reading a lot about guilt and shame (she reckons she feels both on a regular basis) but whereas guilt is related to what she does (or doesn't do) it turns out shame is more about who she is (or isn't).  Maybe She should try to get to the bottom of this after all she knows how much she loves her kids and she really does her best as a mum!  Time to say enough to this sh1t 😜 So what
pushes your shame buttons?

There seem to be so many things to worry about as twenty-first century mothers!  What do you fear and are there more/ different things to worry about for us than there were for our own mothers?

The Fear....

It's New Year and to say that Barbie is feeling a little overwhelmed is an understatement!  The days are short, there is too much to do both at work and at home and she is recovering from the flu!  When she switches the news on she is overcome by stories of child abduction, political crises, terrorist threats and the general fear of Armageddon….and then it hits her!  Perhaps we are all being forced to mother from a place of fear?!?
Maybe she’s taken too many Sudofed…  Maybe she should ask her friends what they think….
